Smoke and fire detectors

(77)

Smoke and fire detectors , and associated base units , detect smoke and other indicators of fire. Read More

Some detectors issue a signal to a separate alarm system, such as fire alarm sounders, beacons and other signalling devices . Others incorporate their own audible or visual alarm.

The detectors employ different processes to detect smoke, heat or carbon monoxide. The most common sensor types are optical, ionisation, thermistor or electromechanical.

Optical detectors use a light sensor, and are often more responsive to fires that start with a long period of smouldering.

Ionisation detectors can detect particles of smoke that are too small to be visible. This heightened sensitivity adds safety, but can also give rise to false alarms.

Sensitive smoke detectors can also be used to deter smoking in enclosed no-smoking areas.
