Vented water heaters rely on a volume of stored cold water, usually kept in a plastic tank, to feed the hot water storage cylinder. Unvented water heaters use mains water pressure to push the water out to the taps or shower.

The use of direct heat to fire the boiler can be very efficient, due to the advances made in modern burner technology.

An indirect water heater uses a heat exchanger to heat the water, or is fired by the central heating system with a conventional boiler, solar thermal or district heating system. They are sometimes known as water storage tanks or thermal stores.

Insulation material is very important and is most commonly polyurethane foam.
