Different devices suit different requirements: hand-held electrical testers to check for earth loops and other electrical faults while ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation; meters and analysers for data processing and display; sensors for monitoring changes in electrical signals; and transducers, which convert measurements such as temperature, flow and pressure into electrical signals that can then be recorded.
Most devices typically measure:
• Voltage , otherwise known as electrical potential difference or electrical tension, is the pressure applied to electrons so that they move. Voltage is measured in either volts (V) or joules per coulomb (J/C).
• Current , which measures the flow of electrons in either amperes or amps (A).
• Power , which is the rate at which electricity is produced. It is measured in watts (W).
• Other parameters such as resistance (R), which is measured in ohms (?), as well as frequency, capacity and inductance.
To measure the electricity consumed by equipment, or by an entire household, business or factory, an electricity / energy meter should be installed.
