Contour just launched a new product that's directly relevant to NHS mental health ward construction and refurbishment programmes: the Anti-Ligature Ventilation Plenum.

It's a ceiling ventilation assembly that connects standard circular ductwork to an IP3X-rated anti-ligature punched grille. It installs flush with the ceiling surface, no projecting frames, no surface-mounted edges and is specified for environments where standard grilles present an unacceptable ligature or anti-tamper risk.

Programme relevance

The Anti-Ligature Ventilation Plenum works in both new build and occupied ward refurbishment. Three standard sizes cover most configurations, and the assembly is compatible with standard round flexible and rigid ductwork, minimising on-site coordination and the risk of late product queries during commissioning. Features include:

  • Grille: IP3X-rated punched steel, 2mm holes at 4mm centres, triangular pitch. Flush ceiling installation no projecting frames, no surface-mounted edges.

  • Grille Material: 1.5mm Zintec steel. Magnelis available for wet-room and en-suite applications.

  • Fixings: Pin Torx button head anti-ligature fixings. Threaded inserts for repeat removal and refitting without wear.

  • BioCote®: Incorporated into powder coat finish as standard RAL 9003 satin. Supports IPC sign-off requirements.

  • Pressure drop: Supply typically 8–10 Pa at nominal flow rates. Extract — higher due to grille restriction; factor into system design at specification stage (26.4 Pa at 80 L/s for 300×300 grille).

  • Three sizes: 200×200mm (Ø125mm spigot), 300×300mm (Ø160mm spigot), 450×450mm (Ø200mm spigot). Compatible with standard round flexible and rigid ductwork.

Applications: Supply and extract. New build and occupied ward refurbishment.
