Context
SDS designed and installed a smart rainwater harvesting and reuse system for Blackburns Farm, a 30-hectare site in Lancashire which also serves as a charitable nursery and wildlife centre, providing locally-grown produce to food banks and supporting education and volunteering. Facing increasing rainfall variability and rising water costs, the farm required a reliable, sustainable irrigation source to support its polytunnels and planting areas.
In partnership with United Utilities, the site became a live demonstration of how smart rainwater reuse can bolster resilience, reduce dependence on mains water, and strengthen community food security.
Project detail
Using the SDS Intellistorm® system, rainfall from two large roof areas - totalling nearly 1,500m² - was captured and stored in four tanks with a combined capacity of 17,500 litres. Intelligent control technology distributes the harvested water across the farm’s growing areas, including polytunnels, saplings and flowerbeds.
The installation was required to integrate seamlessly with existing operations while being scalable, low-maintenance and cost-effective. Despite limited resources, the system was successfully delivered without disruption to the site’s activities.
Result
The system provides a consistent, sustainable water source for food production year-round, reducing reliance on potable mains water. Over 33,800 litres were reused in a 55-day period - an average of more than 600 litres per day - putting the farm on track to save over 100,000 litres annually.
This enhanced capability has enabled Blackburns Farm to expand its support for food banks throughout the winter, increase volunteer and education opportunities, and improve crop quality through the use of naturally soft rainwater. SDS Intellistorm® has provided a future-ready, intelligent solution that supports biodiversity, community resilience and environmental stewardship.
Testimonial
"The smart rainwater system has been a real gamechanger, providing a sustainable water source for our polytunnel and allowing us to grow even more plants and vegetables. Beyond the polytunnel, it has also been instrumental in watering our sapling trees and lavender plants.
"Thanks to this system, we are now able to support our local food bank throughout the year, including during the winter months. This expansion is also opening up more opportunities for volunteers and educational groups, creating an even bigger impact on both the farm and our community
