Chalmit Lighting
The company was founded as Andrew Chalmers and Mitchell Ltd in 1910 to manufacture and supply electrical equipment for the large marine market on the River Clyde. It soon became a major supplier of lighting and electrical products for the marine industry in Scotland.
In the 1970s, success in the marine oil tanker business presented an opportunity for diversification into the wider oil and gas market. Chalmit® captured 85% of the North Sea HID lighting market, a position that it still maintain today.
As its presence in the global oil and gas market grew, the company shortened its name to Chalmers and Mitchel and subsequently, Chalmit. The company's export potential was also expanded, opening offices in Singapore and Abu Dhabi to meet additional demand in the international market.
After acquisition by Whitecroft Group’s lighting division in 1995, Chalmit® joined Simplex Lighting. This gave it access to the B.V. Industria range of Ex e fluorescent products, which it updated and integrated into its own hazardous area lighting portfolio. Subsequent growth in the FPSO market expedited the development of its extensive Ex lighting portfolio.
Hubbell purchased Chalmit from Whitecroft in 1998. As part of Hubbell’s Harsh and Hazardous division, it now provides extensive lighting project capabilities for ATEX and IECEx, including enclosures, fixtures, fittings, control stations, receptacles, and switchgear.
Today, Chalmit Lighting's ISO 9001 certified products are approved by multiple international bodies, including BASEEFA, SIRA, DNV, INMETRO (Brazil), and TRCU (EAC).
